Design challenge

The bio-mechanical futuristic water competition, is the International call for serious ecological ideas for the design of the biological mechanical village or urban quarter of the city – For the city of London, The competition seeks to apply a biological mechanical approach to the future environments of the city, applying the values of bioreef diversity. (the bioreef diversity theory is about the bio mimicry of our great origin and ancestors the coral reefs as the image and problem solver of our future city where great fluid diversity forms can begin to happen in the city in a controlled way.), the city is limited in growth and marooned through the implementation of the green belt. The areas for expansion are either through the current high density processes, which begin to populate flood plains, or to move eastwards denseifying east London breaking through the green belt towards the Thames estuary, where a new second generation London could rise from the waves. The idea is not new, the Thames estuary has been the topic of intense debate through the possibility of building a floating island airport off the coast of Kent, and a nature reserve with a flood gate connecting Essex and Kent in its core via a high speed monorail, These radical approaches cannot be discarded without intense exploration, Could the next east London generation be a floating one?

The risk of flooding and density problems points to need for radical thinking, bringing the exciting prospect of populating the estuary and Thames with a new generation of floating eco villages, Thames bridge communities, and farms could emerge from the waves, integrating the interesting interwoven layers and networks of the canals and rivers that London has populated and built. London’s birth depended on water, London’s present is a balance of city and water together, London’s futuristic city will undoubtedly be a water based city formed by the rise of sea levels.

The futuristic water competition seeks to harmonize the two through the explored application of the bio reef mechanical diversity architecture theory to its future environments. The use of new materials, technologies, (green tidal, wind, sea, bio fuel and solar energy ideals). Aesthetics, and novel spatial organizations, along with studies on globalization, population increase, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution are some of the multi-layered elements that the participants should take into consideration.

City designs originally designed for other world cities but provide extremely commendable qualities which may be useful for London, will also be considered for the bioreef diversity publication if clearly demonstrated how the concept can be adapted – world examples section.

There are no restrictions in regards to site, program or size. The objective is to provide maximum freedom to the participants to engage the project without very specific constraints in the most creative way. Proposals could tackle housing issues in London, tackle and propose a financial and research technology hub, which brings thousands of jobs, with 21st century homes, urban farm integrations, public green spaces that has rich urban vibrancy and street life , the question is how does London grow and prosper in the 21st century as a fluid diverse world city, but with sustainability at its core. The full brief and competition material can be found on the competition website.,

Awards

The Awards recognise innovative and sustainable solutions to current issues faced by London but also to engage with global innovative ideas, which are capable of being transferred or adapted for use in London.

Entries are assessed by a panel of international judges, a cash award, book publication,AB LAB access, and unique websites linked to the foundation, will be presented to the two winning projects.

15-20 Honourable mention projects will also be featured in the bio-diversity book along with unique connected websites to the foundation with personal forums. This gives everyone a serious platform for self publication but to engage in debate and discussions.

All submissions will receive an archive page (mini website) on the foundation website with full project description and personal forum and entry into the network paradigm.

a Special Student Award will also be a part of the awards: to be announced.

Submission requirements

two 24” by 36” colour boards (landscape orientation) presented as digital files in PDF format at 300 dpi. Total combined files size is 20 MB. + word document can be uploaded separately, These boards are the visual summary of the transformation each team envisions for London city.

A word document of between 1000 – 3000 words describing the project.

Files should be named by your unique entry code number and submitted on the website registration page or sent to biologicalarchitecturefoundation@live.co.uk

for example your files should look like this:
Entrycode677board1.pdf 10mb
Entrycode677board2.pdf 10mb
and Entrycode677.doc if you would like to submit a word document as well.

The competition is open to all students, Architects, Artists, individuals, and organisations, including central and local governments, community-based groups, NGOs, research organisations and the private sector from any country in the world.

We strongly encourage the formation of interdisciplinary competition teams. We invite you to consult with or research professions not usually included in design competitions. Consider including biologist students, climatologists; public health experts, educators and urban activists along with designers, engineers and urban planners.

There is no limit on the number of entries a given organization may submit, but all entrants must pay the full entry fee and each entry must meet every contest requirement to be considered.

Jury – The Jury has been carefully constructed to test the projects ecologically, and how it supports or contradicts the bioreef diversity theory.

Entries will be assessed by a large panel of international judges, representatives from BA foundation (2) Architect (1) Biologist (1) the British biological architecture foundation,(2) Engineer (1) Biologist (1) representatives from across the international bio-diversity organisations (2) Ecological Coral reef Experts . and Guest Architects in the Biomimicry Field (3). Judging will take place at a chosen research facility in Europe, Foundation headquarters in London, and at the BA,LAB and indian ocean facility,

for the bioreef diversity book and publication winners will recieve a variatiion of between 10-15 pages each, within the book.

winner announced 29th June.

2011 -2012

your projects will undergo rigorous testing in 2011, For government submission, and other projects which are government connected, where we can identify whether building regulations can be changed to allow a new fluid formed London generation to flourish. And allow planners to grant fluid diversity for the sake of bio mimicry, which allows greater natural efficiency- and the sustainability of our planet.

The competition is one of the early initiatives of BA. for architects, students and designers to prove the needed shift in planning, and prove the needed fluid diversity to be allowed and the huge positive contribution it can make on our city environments. Which will make way for the investment to be allowed into the city for projects, which will otherwise be blocked through past planning laws. For now we are searching internationally for beautiful fluid diverse projects, which deal with the issues – outlined in the competition description and others you may already be researching.Building a database of beautiful designs for the environment of London city.

Unleash the power of your imagination to envision a London capable of thriving through the future centuries.
